Amputation is defined as the loss of any body part due to accident, trauma or disease. There are more than one million people with amputations living in the United States today. If you or someone you love has suffered an amputation caused by someone's negligence, we may be able to help.

What are the causes?

Amputations occur for many reasons. In the United States, approximately half of the amputations happen as a result of complications from deficient circulation and disease (such as diabetes). Occasionally, a doctor may be liable for medical malpractice if there was a delay in diagnosis, but those cases are often difficult to prove. To be held liable, we must prove that the doctor's actions or inactions failed to meet the standard of care, and we must prove that had the doctor done what he should have that there would not have been amputation malpractice.

Accidents can also lead to amputation. Those liable may include automobile drivers, manufacturers of certain products, construction site operators, owners of dangerous property, and others. If your amputation was caused by an accident, our Ohio amputation lawyers would like to hear from you.

If you believe your amputation was caused by a doctor's negligence, or by an accident, we would be happy to discuss your case with you free of charge. Email us or call us at (800) 670-0529.

What is the cost of amputation?

Someone who has suffered an amputation incurs both economic and noneconomic damages. For example, a prosthesis (an artificial limb) can cost between $8,000 and $100,000, depending upon the type of prosthesis and the extent of the injury. The average prosthesis must be replaced every two to five years, as well. This, in addition to the cost of medical care and physical therapy, can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The suffering that amputation causes is not just economic and does not end with the original injury. Amputation can cause considerable blood loss, shock, infection, and even death. Even after surviving these debilitating aftereffects, many amputees continue to be disabled by residual pain. Many amputees find that they cannot work at the same job. Issues of disability and lowered income may also arise. Our attorneys are particularly experienced in the problems related to the residual nerve pain caused by amputation. We understand that the pain from nerve damage can be some of the most intolerable pain produced by the human body.
