What is the cost of amputation?
Someone who has suffered an amputation incurs both economic and noneconomic damages. For example, a prosthesis (an artificial limb) can cost between $8,000 and $100,000, depending upon the type of prosthesis and the extent of the injury. The average prosthesis must be replaced every two to five years, as well. This, in addition to the cost of medical care and physical therapy, can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The suffering that amputation causes is not just economic and does not end with the original injury. Amputation can cause considerable blood loss, shock, infection, and even death. Even after surviving these debilitating aftereffects, many amputees continue to be disabled by residual pain. Many amputees find that they cannot work at the same job.
