Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that forms in the cervix. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens at the top of the vagina.

Cervical cancer is the third most common type of cancer in women worldwide.

How to Prevent Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is a very slow-developing form of cancer. It can take several years to develop. Cervical cancer starts as a precancerous condition called dysplasia. Dysplasia is entirely treatable if it is detected in its early stages. If it is overlooked, dysplasia slowly develops into cervical cancer.

Dysplasia can be detected by a routine pap smear. Pap smears are tests run by gynecologists in order to check for infections, diseases, and cancers in the cervix. Doctors recommend that women who are more than 20 years of age and women who are sexually active have a pap smear performed every year.

Symptoms

Symptoms of early cervical cancer include: continuous vaginal discharge; abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods, after intercourse, or after menopause; and/or periods that become heavier and last longer than usual.

Treatments

The most common types of treatment for cervical cancer are: chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hysterectomies. If cervical cancer is detected in its early stages, the most common types of treatment are: cyrosurgeries, diathermies, laser surgeries, and electrocoagulation.

Causes

Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).

Pap Smear Errors

Routine pap smears are the best way to detect cervical cancer in its earliest stages. But recent studies have shown that many pap smears are misread. Therefore, many physicians are telling women that they are perfectly healthy when, in fact, they have early signs of cancer. This results in delayed cervical cancer diagnoses. Without the correct pap smear result, women do not realize that they have cancer until they begin to have symptoms. In many cases, cervical cancer does not reveal itself until it is too late. Delayed diagnoses of cervical cancer can result in unnecessary hysterectomies and even death. If you suspect that you have been the victim of a misread pap smear, contact a lawyer at Goren, Goren & Harris immediately.
