What is paralysis?

Paralysis is defined as the loss of muscle function in any part of the body because of nerve damage.

What causes paralysis?

Paralysis can be caused by:

What are the various types of paralysis?

Localized paralysis: Paralysis is considered to be localized when it occurs in one particular part of the body.

Global paralysis: Paralysis is considered to be global when there is weakness throughout the entire body.

Hemiplegia: Paralysis is called hemiplegia when it occurs as weakness on one side of the body. This commonly occurs after strokes.

Paraplegia: Paralysis is called paraplegia when it occurs in the lower parts of the body. This is usually a result of a lower spinal cord injury.

Quadriplegia: Paralysis is called quadriplegia when the paralysis occurs in all four limbs. This is usually a result of an upper spinal cord injury.
